It's Okay to Wish Me a Merry Christmas

Received this wonderful message from the North Pole!

As I wrote in Starting the Conversation in December's issue of Northern Connection magazine, it's okay to wish me a "Merry Christmas!"

As I also mentioned, I never mind receiving a "Happy Holidays" or a "Season's Greetings" so won't you send us your favorite wish for the holidays?

  1. From a reader:
I'm taking your invitation to respond to your article in the Northern Connection magazine on wishing holiday greetings. I have been expressing these same sentiments, although not as eloquently as you, for many years. As a member of the North Hills Anti-Racism Coalition, I have had the privilege of meeting Muslims, Hindus, Jews and fellow Christians. I wouldn't think of wishing any of them a Merry Christmas, except the Christians. I work with many Jewish people and always wish them a Happy Hanukkah, as well as put up a small mennorah, next to the nativity set, on my desk! And they wish me a Merry Christmas. People are so upset with 'political correctness', but I think it's just being culturally sensitive. After all, we are a multi-cultural nation and always have been. However, it's only in recent decades that we have encouraged people to maintain their cultures with food, dress, customs etc. Years ago, people were told to leave their language and customs behind and become ":American". I just talked to a lady at the nail salon and she said she didn't mind 'those' people living here, but take off the darn head scarves - you're in America now and we don't wear those!" I was glad that my nails were dry so I could leave before I said something regrettable.

Anyway, thanks for the excellent perspective; I hope the message reaches those it needs to reach!
